Welcome to Art Department. We are an independent locally owned art supply store in the heart of downtown Salem Oregon. Our intention is to be your resource for affordable art materials, information and education. We accomplish this by stocking a huge selection of art supplies for the student to the professional artist. Anything we don't have we can usually get within a few days. Our store is staffed with actual artists who are super friendly and knowledgeable about the products and their applications. We also offer classes, lectures, demos and workshops.

Katy and Jim Vigeland, partners in marriage and business since 1975 purchased Art Department, Inc. in 1994. Both are South Salem High and U of O graduates living in Salem where they are now raising their two children, Haley and Erik.

Jim and Katy have been extremely community-minded since the business began. They have donated time, money and materials to Salem Keizer Public Schools, Salem Art Fair, SAA, Keizer Art Assn, Kroc Center, Artists in Action, Capitol Calligraphers and countless other organizations. We also show our customers artwork in monthly art exhibits with a reception the first Wednesday of every month.
